RESTORATION
We recently completed the restoration and improvement of the Grade II* listed Chelsea Old Town Hall for the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea. We were instructed to work on this historically significant building to provide new facilities while reconciling heritage issues with the needs of modern local government which involved extensive liaison with the Council’s Conservation Officer.
The works included modernising the office accommodation and some public areas and specialist restoration of the Main Hall, Small Hall and the Cadogan Suite to their Victorian grandeur. Improvements to the Registrar’s Office, the reception area and to the toilets also formed part of the works. A significant level of damp proofing and associated work was carried out at lower ground floor level which was undertaken as a variation to the original scope of work.
The services installations included a VRV installation to the commercial areas, a ducted ventilation system to all areas with 4 new heat recovery AHU’s, associated BMS controls, adaptions to the existing heating system including AHU coil feeds and LTHW fan coil units to conference areas, adaptions to domestic hot and cold water supplies to new kitchens and WC’s, new Cat 6a BCA data cabling and racks, a POE CCTV installation, a BORER access control system, rewire and adaptions to lighting and small power installations with new LED lighting, replacement switchgear, full new intruder and a panic alarm with paging, adaptions and extensions to the fire alarm installation and new disabled refuge intercom.
External work included stonework repairs and cleaning together with redecoration of windows, doors and rainwater goods.
The refurbishment was undertaken in phases over an 18 month period to ensure the building remained open throughout with minimal disruption to public services.
